ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The son of an activist who has been critical of Albuquerque police shootings has been shot and killed by police in Michigan. Jewel Hall says that her son, Milton Hall, was shot by Saginaw police last week. Saginaw police say the 49-year-old Hall was wielding a knife and was shot more than 40 times after moving toward several officers. Hall attended high school in Albuquerque.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The New Mexico Motor Vehicles Division will soon have new technology to verify documents presented by people seeking driver's licenses. The Albuquerque Journal reports that the changes include bar code readers to help verify bank statements and utility bills, and other software to help ensure passports are legitimate.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - While a new state rating system gives most of New Mexico's schools passing grades, most are Cs and Ds. Gov. Susana Martinez has unveiled the first report card under a new grading system that allows officials to consider more than just annual student test scores. Under the new system, 69 of the state's 831 schools failed.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - An audit is raising questions about the Albuquerque Fire Department's ability to maintain its fire engines, rescue vehicles and other trucks. The Albuquerque Journal reports that the city auditors said the department's repair shop is smaller and less-equipped than similar cities' and that the fire department has paid too much to private vendors who handle some repair work. Fire officials defended their mechanics' work but say they will take steps to address the findings.
