Amarillo Police responded to a 911 call that a resident had defended his home, in the 500 block of West Cliffside, from a burglary attempt.

The resident heard loud pounding sounds coming from a room in his home. He picked up a baseball bat and went to the noises.

The home owner found a black male with a hammer and screwdriver trying to force open a small safe.

When confronted the suspect fled from the home. The home owner struck the suspect with the bat in the upper body.

Witnesses saw a blue passenger car drive away from the front of the home while the suspect fled. The vehicle left eastward on Cliffside.

The identity of the driver has not been released. The suspect has not been located.

Police believe the suspect entered the home through an unlocked door. Authorities also believe that the vehicle is connected with the burglary attempt.

The victim found nothing missing from the home and no one else was injured.
