SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - State regulators are fining the owners and operators of a Deming truck stop $375,000 for selling securities without a license. The New Mexico Securities Division says a criminal investigation is under way against the three men who own and operate Fuel 4 Less and the Savoy Travel Center in Deming. The agency says that 33 investors were defrauded of $5.5 million.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Officials in New Mexico's lakeside town of Elephant Butte have changed their leash law to let community icon-turned-national media star Blue the dog continue to roaming free, but within the confines of a wireless fence. The vote yesterday ended a closely watched, months-long dispute over whether the blue-eyed Australian heeler would have to abide by city leash laws.
CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) - Carlsbad Caverns National Park is back open after fumes forced its closure on Monday. Park Superintendent John Benjamin says employees complained of headaches and other illnesses traced to fumes from a solvent used to clean rails in the cavern. Benjamin says three industrial hygienists toured the building yesterday morning and determined that it was safe for visitors and employees to return.
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A renowned chile expert at New Mexico State University has been elected president of the American Society for Horticultural Science. The university says Paul Bosland will take over the position at the society's July 31 meeting in Miami. Bosland co-founded NMSU's Chile Pepper Institute and serves as its director.
