LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A man who lives west of Las Cruces has been indicted on animal cruelty and other charges after more than two dozen dogs and fowl were seized from his property. The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that Jack Catlan was indicted on 53 counts.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Loads of grass seeds and straw mulch are being scattered by helicopters in a re-vegetation effort in portions of the Gila and Lincoln national forests that were blackened by wildfires earlier this summer. The Albuquerque Journal reports the Forest Service hopes the areas will sprout new grass reducing the risk of downstream flooding.
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Santa Fe Public Schools is spending $2.4 million to buy Apple computers to help improve student math scores through Web-based instruction. The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that the computers will be installed at three public high schools and in two elementary school classrooms.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - About 80 malpractice claims that forced an Alamogordo hospital to seek bankruptcy court protection have been settled for more than $33 million. The Albuquerque Journal reports the settlement lets Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center emerge from bankruptcy. Former patients alleged that they were injured when cement used in spinal procedures seeped into other areas and later cracked.
