LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A Deming gun store owner accused of selling weapons to Mexican drug cartels says he never took seriously talk about taking guns and ammunition south of the border. New Deal Shooting Sports owner Rick Reese testified yesterday that the man who later turned out to be an informant was boisterous and bragging all the time, so he didn't believe anything he said.
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A state district court judge has awarded nearly $3 million in fees to attorneys who represented Democratic, Republican, Native American and Hispanic voter interests in redistricting lawsuits. District Judge James Hall said the groups were entitled to attorney's fees because they prevailed in parts of the redistricting dispute, but he reduced some fees by 10 percent based on the degree of success they had in the litigation.
WASHINGTON (AP) __ President Barack Obama has signed a bill sponsored by New Mexico Democratic Congressman Martin Heinrich that will make it easier to build homes and energy project on tribal land. The so-called HEARTH Act enables tribes to approve trust land leases directly, rather than waiting for approval from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The Navajo Nation already has that authority.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The Grant County Sheriff's office is investigating the death of a 22-year-old man whose body was found inside an Arenas Valley home on Sunday. Another man was injured and taken to a hospital in critical condition. KOB-TV reports that authorities found the men responding to a call of "shots fired" on Sunday. They would not say how 22-year-old Josiah Roybal died.
