LOS ALAMOS, N.M. (AP) - Los Alamos National Laboratory is warning its employees to prepare for protests as the anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb nears. The world's first atomic bomb was developed in Los Alamos during World War II and was dropped on Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945. The Santa Fe New Mexican reports activists are gathering around the lab over the next few days to mark Monday's anniversary.
ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) - Lawmakers in Alamogordo have repealed a tax on hangar rentals at the regional airport. Alamogordo-White Sands Regional Airport coordinator Randy Hills says only one person had been paying the 2 percent tax required on income generated by commercial activities.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico is receiving more than $7.4 million in federal funds to reduce congestion and improve safety along the state's roadways. The Jicarilla Apache Nation in northern New Mexico will get the largest share of the funds with $3 million. The project includes reconstructing parts of NM 537 to accommodate heavier truck loads and widening lanes and shoulders.
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Retiring New Mexico Supreme Court Justice Patricio Serna is being honored by a national Hispanic organization. The Mexican American Legal Defense Fund will give Serna its 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award next month in San Antonio. MALDEF president Thomas Saenz said Serna was chosen because of his "tireless efforts and commitment to advocating for equity, civil rights and full inclusion for all Latinos living in the United States."
