LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A lawsuit over the use of red-light cameras in Las Cruces is moving to federal court. The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that lawsuit filed two years ago in state court alleges that the cameras violate the constitutional rights of motorists who are ticketed with the cameras. The city argued that the suit dealt with issued best heard in federal court.
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A judge has sentenced a Santa Fe woman to a year of electronic monitoring after being convicted of killing a motorcyclist while driving drunk. The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that District Judge Michael Vigil also ordered 53-year-old Margaret Garcia to speak at victim impact panels. She could have faced up to six years in prison.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Microlender ACCION New Mexico has been awarded a $1.35 million federal grant to help it continue providing low-interest loans to small businesses and entrepreneurs who can't get regular bank loans. Sens. Jeff Bingaman and Tom Udall say the grant from the Treasury Department will help bring loans to entrepreneurs who might be overlooked by traditional lenders.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The Albuquerque Public Schools district is covering the cost of meals this year for students who qualify for reduced rates. District spokesman John Miller says a decision to start charging food providers for things like utilities has made money available for the meals. About 7,000 students qualify for the reduced rate meals, which cost 40 cents for lunch and 30 cents for breakfast.
