A solider from Paducah had a close call last weekend as he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED).

Army Sergeant Mark Worley, 23, of Paducah was severely injured in Afghanistan and is now on the road to recovery. His family first got the news early Saturday morning.

"He sustained injuries right above the knee and had some amputation and damage to his right forearm and his left upper and lower leg," said Mark's mom Mona Betzen.

Mark is now recovering in Germany.

"You never think it's going to happen to you, you know? You never think about it until you get that call," said Mark's brother James Worley.

His family said they are extremely thankful for the community's help and prayers.
