ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A few Democrats serving in the New Mexico Senate have launched political action committees to counter Gov. Susana Martinez's financial clout. Democratic Sen. Gerald Ortiz y Pino of Albuquerque tells The Albuquerque Journal PACs were created after Democrats saw the amount of cash raised this year by a pair of groups headed by Martinez's political adviser, Jay McCleskey.
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Construction is still under way at four public schools in Santa Fe as the first day of school approaches. An official with Santa Fe Public Schools tells the Santa Fe New Mexican the schools will open as scheduled and the projects will continue for anywhere from another week to a full semester.
GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) - A firefighter who suffered minor burns on an Oregon range fire after crawling into her emergency shelter is a member of the Zuni Interagency Hotshots from New Mexico. U.S. Bureau of Land Management spokesman Michael Campbell says the woman - whose name has been withheld at her request - is a U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs employee.
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A Santa Fe man was cited for misdemeanor animal cruelty after a witness reported him shooting a pellet gun at a prairie dog from a truck. Police tell The Santa Fe New Mexican 71-year-old Bruce Wienke admitted to shooting at a prairie dog while stopped at the red light but said he wasn't responsible for earlier prairie dog deaths at the site.
