DALLAS (AP) - The first aerial spraying of insecticides in the Dallas area since the 1960s is set for this week in the battle against the worst outbreak of West Nile virus in the nation this year. The company hired to spray for mosquitoes in Dallas County says at least two planes will be in position by Thursday evening.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) - A county official says a law enforcement officer fatally shot near Texas A&M University while delivering a notice in an eviction case volunteered for the house call. Brazos County Justice of the Peace Michael McCleary says 41-year-old county Constable Brian Bachmann "grabbed" the notice from a deputy. Authorities say Bachmann and a bystander were killed when 35-year-old Thomas Alton Caffall the Third opened fire Monday as Bachmann approached the home. Police say officers fatally shot Caffall.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas lawmakers are hearing testimony about the possibility of levying fees on tobacco firms that weren't part of the state's multibillion dollar 1998 settlement with major cigarette companies. Big tobacco manufacturers complain they are getting undersold by smaller firms.
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Department of Homeland Security is releasing for the first time details on how illegal immigrants brought to the United States as children can apply to avoid deportation and receive a work permit. The director of U.S. Immigration and Citizenship Services says people who qualify for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program can download the application from the agency's website today.
