AMARILLO, TX -- Storm damage has taken its toll on many areas around Amarillo. Some folks were lucky to avoid major tree damage. Others, however, didn't fare as well.

Amarillo resident Sandy Henderson said, "It started raining and started pouring, pouring down. I didn't realize the high winds I thought it was rain lots of rain and then my husband came home an hour later and said, "You will not believe the yard." I went outside and it was just like I had stepped into another world."

Amarillo arbological spent the entire day removing tree limbs throughout the area. Arborists said that there are many contributing factors to this much damage. Arborist, Jake McWhorter said, "It’s really wind. Wind last night we had almost hurricane force winds. I think I heard like 78 mph and all those mature trees especially in the Wolflin area they're just very mature old trees and they're very tall so the wind caught those tips and just started breaking them."

Trees didn't only damage houses and yards. One Amarillo family had to deal with removing a rather large tree off their truck. "The front panel is going to have to be replaced, the hoods going to have to be buffed out. Tailgate replaced, side panel replaced but at least all the glass is there and it can be fixed," said Christy Woodard.

Arborist, Jake McWhorter had some advice on how to prevent this type of damage in the future. "regular pruning and proper pruning which means working from the ends back in and not topping trees, not lines tailing tress is just a regular tree maintenance program about every two years and getting your tree pruned and the ends lightened up will greatly reduce the incidents of failure."

If money is spent now, people can save from unexpected tree damage costs down the road.
