SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez plans to use her debut on the national political stage to offer a message of hope and opportunity. A Martinez aide previewed the theme of the speech the governor is to deliver tonight at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. Martinez will describe how she rose from modest roots in a border community to become the nation's first female Hispanic governor.
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - The Arizona Court of Appeals says a Navajo child can remain with his non-American Indian caretakers, despite a federal law that gives preference to placement with tribal members. The child identified as "Z'' in court records was a month old when relatives of the man believed to be his father began caring for him. The appellate court says the child would suffer severe distress if removed from his setting.
AZTEC, N.M. (AP) - A mistrial has been declared again in the trial of a Gallup man accused of killing two men last year. Jurors in Aztec deliberated for nearly six hours before telling a judge yesterday that they couldn't reach a unanimous decision in the case of 19-year-old Alex Redhorse. The Gallup Independent says McKinley County prosecutors will decide in about a week whether to re-try the case.
SANTA ROSA, N.M. (AP) - Police say a single car crash in eastern New Mexico has killed a Mexican national and injured 11 others. Police say three of the twelve passengers, all from Mexico, were ejected during this morning's crash, and 44-year-old Javier Tarango was pronounced deceased at the scene.
