ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The state has agreed to settle a lawsuit with a whistleblower who accused the New Mexico Department of Health of nepotism and financial irregularities. The Albuquerque Journal reports under a settlement made public last week, former state Department of Health manager Diane Moore received $225,000 and agreed to resign and never seek reinstatement. She filed her whistleblower lawsuit against the agency in 2010.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The attorney for Albuquerque Ponzi schemer Doug Vaughan says federal prosecutors are reneging on his plea deal. Vaughan pleaded guilty in December and agreed to serve up to 12 years in prison for the scam that bilked investors out of $75 million. Vaughan's defense attorney says prosecutors have reneged on an agreement to allow her client to be put in a prison treatment plan for alcohol issues.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A federal judge has sentenced a former national guardsman to 10 years in prison for child sexual exploitation. Prosecutors say Jeffrey Neal Jackson admitted to that he responded to a Craigslist ad from a girl he thought was 15 years old but was really an undercover officer. Authorities say Jackson traveled from Texas to Curry County, N.M., to have sex with the person he believed was a teen.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Albuquerque is hosting a national conference on sex offender laws and is expected to draw attorneys, politicians and even registered sex offenders. KOB-TV reports the visiting registered sex offenders have some Albuquerque residents on edge. An Albuquerque police spokeswoman says police will lay out a plan today on how it will handle the conference.
