AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Both the Republicans and the Democrats have wrapped up their conventions. So now, the focus shifts to the voters, and getting more Americans registered.

Thursday evening, The League of Women Voters of Amarillo were working on just that. One way or another, this year's conventions sparked a lot of excitement for the upcoming election, and both parties hope they've attracted more votes. Locally, the league was offering help to make sure you're signed up.

It only takes a couple of minutes to make sure your vote will count, and The League of Women Voters is helping people understand the basics of the registration process.

League board member Alan Abraham said, "If you have a driver's license, use that information. If you don't then the second choice is the last four digits of your social security number because it goes through a state data base."

The information requested on the application involves things that you carry in your memory; name, birthday, address, and social security or driver's license number.

"I would encourage anybody if you don't know for sure if you're registered, or if you need to change your address, if you've moved and haven't changed your address, (to register)" said Manager at Randall County Voter Registrar's Office Ruthie Poyner. "Please do that before the deadline, contact our office and I think this is a very important election and everyone should get out and vote."

As we count down the days until the general election, the deadline to be registered, October 9th, is right around the corner. "I just think it's very important for anybody to register to vote and to get out and vote, because there's an expression, 'your vote is your voice' and that's so true," said Poyner.

Although there are other options on the road to getting your voter registration card officials say the application is the easiest. Abraham said, "Take one of those cards, postage is already paid for, and drop in in the mail. It goes to the secretary of state's office and returns to the local county".

In most cases, you must be registered in the county in which you will vote, but there are some exceptions. If you need help, you can go to randallcounty.org or call your local registrar's office. Early voting begins October 22nd.
