AMARILLO, TEXAS -- One of the most prominent agencies in the Amarillo area is changing its name.

Catholic Family Service, Inc., announced on Tuesday a new name: Catholic Charities of the Texas Panhandle.

The agency was founded in 1932 as Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Amarillo. With the new name change, the agency said it is going back to its roots.

As for the mission of the agency, officials said it, along with the programs it offers, will not change.

"We changed from Catholic Family Service because we are working in the 26 counties area and hope to increase the work that we do throughout the Texas Panhandle," Nancy Coons, Executive Director said. "The name is basically going back to our roots."

The mission of the agency is a multi-service social service that offers assistance to people of all faiths, races and ages.

"Our work goes beyond working with families, we work with youth elderly, and handicapped individuals, but the Catholic charities of the Texas Panhandle is so much for reflection of who we are and what we do," Koons said.
