AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Almost exactly five days from Thursday, we may have a lot of answers to this year's election questions.

So far in Potter County, early turnout is low.

"Early voting for Potter County, we're a little bit down from what we were four years ago in the presidential election, not by much," said Knoxie Mathes Potter Co. Election Administration. "Through yesterday, we were down about 1,000, but that could very easily pick-up today and then finish out tomorrow a lot higher than what I anticipated."

In Amarillo there are 52,325 registered voters and as of yesterday voter turnout by personal appearance was at 20 percent.

Officials say it's more than just the presidential contact that voters should take in to consideration.

"There's also local offices, there's state offices, that are on the ballot so that gets there voice out there, you know as the people say you don't vote m you can't complain about who made it into office," said Mathes. "So they really need to get out there and vote."

With the electoral votes weighing heavy in the presidential election, the experts say locally is where your vote is needed most.

"When you take into consideration that people don't get to pick their leaders at least we get a chance to vote," said Dr. David Rausch Bivins Professor of Political Science. "It may not matter as much, my one vote in whose elected(as president), it's much more important to vote in local elections like city council and school boards, because there your vote does matter a lot more."

Many races are neck and neck, and officials encourage every voter to get to the polls.
