AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Affecting 1 in 88 children in America, and 1 in every 54 boys, strides are being made to learn more about children and adults with autism.

Once thought to be a debilitating diagnosis, many children and adults are embracing the characteristics associated with autism, and using them to their benefit. A recent article by the New York Times states that half of Americans diagnosed with autism never attend college, or find a job within two years after high school graduation.

With advances in research, and a growing awareness, there is an increased focus on autism in the workplace. Careers in math, science, and computer technology are seeking the detail-oriented traits often found in those with autism.

Local support centers, The Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services, and Specialized Therapy Services, are providing resources and developmental learning skills to help those with autism function in the workplace. These programs are designed to socialize children and adults with autism, as well as provide support to the employer that hires them.
