Sergio James. A Clovis Jury found James guilty Tuesday of Drug Trafficking of Cocaine in Clovis, N.M.
CLOVIS, NEW MEXICO -- A Clovis jury found Sergio James, 35, guilty of Drug Trafficking of cocaine.
The jury came to the decision after a one day trial where evidence from law enforcement established that James had been selling crack cocaine out of his residence in Clovis, New Mexico.
"We are extremely pleased with the verdict and the time and effort put into this investigation by our local team of narcotic officers. The District Attorney's Office intends to prove at sentencing that this is the second conviction of James for trafficking drugs since the year 2000, which will enhance his prison sentence to a mandatory 18 years in the New Mexico Department of Corrections," District Attorney Matthew Chandler said.
Agents with the Region V Drug Task Force obtained a search warrant to search the residence. On May 18, 2011 agents arrived to search the home and James told officers there were no drugs inside the house.
The search ultimately discovered powdered cocaine, digital and metal gram scales, numerous bags to package cocaine and over $700 in cash.
A sentencing hearing will be set for James within the next 30 days. James faces up to 18 years in prison.
