AMARILLO, TEXAS -- From Dec. 21, 2012 through New Year's Eve Amarillo Police made eight arrests for DUI, two for Possession of Marijuana and one for Possesion of Meth.

Four of the eight DUI arrests were made New Year's Eve night, police said.

The arrests were the direct result of a grant received by the Amarillo Police Department courtesy of the Texas Department of Transportation to ensure safety this holiday season.

TXDOT supplied the grant to provide Amarillo with more patrol officers to concentrate on areas that are heavy with impaired drivers.

In 2012 Amarillo saw an increase in traffic fatalities and the extra patrol was an effort to curb the number of fatal incidents.

TXDOT's newest slogan was P.A.S.S (Persons Appointed to Stay Sober).
