AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Scouts from around the Panhandle spent the day working on merit badges at the Merit Badge University program held at West Texas A&M University.

"Merit Badge University is an event put on by the Golden Spread Council that brings together professionals in subject matters that help teach the scouts the merit badges," says Boy Scout leader Paul Roberson

The program helps scouts working toward their Eagle Scout. The Eagle Scout is the highest award and achievement that can be made by a Boy Scout. Scout leaders and parents hope the classes will make a long-term impact on the boys' future.

"Hopefully we develop them into the type of citizens that we all want our country to have," says Boy Scout leader Joe Hillhouse.

The Merit Badge University also hosted training courses and scout safety education for adult leaders. The program aims to promote awareness and education to scouts and leaders throughout the year.
