AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The Sand Drag is an event that many say they look forward to every year. The last weekend of every February is when off-roaders from all over make their way to the river for some outdoor fun. For some it's just a place to show off their new toys, but for others it means a lot more.
"It's not only coming here every year, it's a weekend thing for me and my family," said Dwey Mincey. "I've been coming here for 25 to 30 years now. It's a family tradition."
Mincey states that it's been a place where people can bring their kids and teach them about the land and how to have fun and stay out of trouble.
While this may be a yearly event, the National Park Services is looking to create a plan that would see how off-road vehicles affect the land and may possibly ban folks from going to places like this.
The Texas Off-Roaders Association is fighting to help make sure that these restrictions won't change their annual tradition.
"It has evolved around to make sure this area stays open and that everybody can come down here and do it like they have for the past 20 to 30 years," said President of the Texas Off-Roaders Association, Brian Wallace. "We want everybody to get involved and stay involved so that way we can keep it open for everybody."
The association asks that the community get involved and speak out to have their voices heard. "We also need them to come to the meeting to make sure their voice is heard throughout the off-roader community."
The public meetings will be held February 26th from 5:30 - 7:30 pm at the Ashmore Inn and Suites in Amarillo and on February 27th from 5:30 - 7:30 pm at the Sanford-Fritch Schools, Business Office in Fritch.
