CANYON, TEXAS -- A 17-year-old Canyon teenager was arrested and charged with auto theft and murder after police said he ran over a man while trying to steal a pickup.

At about 12:10 a.m., Tuesday, police were called to Birdie Cove in the Hunsley Hills addition on a call of someone being struck by a vehicle along with possible shots fired. When officers arrived, they said a 29-year-old man was found laying on the street with severe injuries. A witness was helping the man, police said.

According to police, a 2011 GMC pickup was in the process of being stolen from the driveway of the home. The truck's owner along with another man attempted to stop the suspect. Police said the witness fired several rounds toward the pickup from a handgun.

The truck's owner, a 29-year-old man, was apparently struck and ran over by the fleeing vehicle, police said.

He was transported to Northwest Texas Hospital where he died a short time later with massive injuries.

The stolen pickup was located later at the Palo Duro Creek Golf Course.

A suspect was then identified by police. Apollo Rivera-Rodriguez was arrested and taken into custody without further incident, police said.
