A second Judicial District judge has dismissed the case filed against Former New Mexico Secretary of State Rebecca Vigil-Giron on the grounds that the repeated delays violated her speedy trial rights.
Judge Reed Sheppard said Vigil-Giron did nothing to cause a delay in the case other than asking the State Attorney General's Office be disqualified She, along with three co-defendants, were indicted six years ago after an investigation of the spending of federal voter-education funds.
"I really, truly believe that was a witch hunt,"Vigil-Giron stated. "I became a target because of the laws that supported the Help America Vote Act. It actually spoke to the fact that we needed, all the states had to educate their voters uniformly."
Vigil-Giron said she would have no problem walking back through the door of public office if that is what God intends for her to do.
"I had a lot of support from my friends and strangers that would comfort me during these six years of this assault on my character and my integrity."
When asked why she felt Gary King came after six years ago, Vigil-Giron said it was because of her numbers and success.
"I guess my numbers pulled higher than his. When you try to get a big campaign going for you, you want to make sure that you kill your competition. And he almost killed me."
