AMARILLO, TEXAS -- For 15 plus years now, residents of Potter county have grown used to seeing a military landmark next to the courthouse, but now the tank, a memorial to all veterans of war must move.

The Texas Historical Commission and Potter County are currently undergoing a major courthouse restoration project, and the THC will not allow the tank to stay since it's not a part of the buildings original history.

"It's a disappointment, you know judge Tipton and I both served on that tank and when you have something that you've trained on that later took you to war and brought you back safely, it's kind of heartbreaking to have to give up something," said Judge Arthur Ware, Potter County.

Currently the Potter County Commission is searching for another location within Potter County to relocate the tank.

I'm with packrat on this one. Move it until the THC has given up the money and "restored" the courthouse. Then move it back immediately. It's a sad day when the THC orders a historical monument moved.

Also, could someone please find out why the THC wants it moved? I hope it’s just for construction and not some political BS. It better be back someday.

PS It's neat to hear from guys that served in that tank, thanks for commenting and thanks for your service. I know how lucky I am have this much freedom.

This is a shame...........

You know, speaking as a retired Navy veteran with 20 years service, I think this is a real disservice to all veterans of all wars. I mean, we just donated several thousand dollars to send WWII veterans to Washington DC so that they could go to the WWII memorial, yet, here in Amarillo, the city council and the mayor have seen fit to remove a memorial to my fellow brothers and sisters in arms. My question is, do any of the idiots voting for this to be moved, know what it means to have served your country? Do they understand the sacrifice made by many men and women over the years so that they could be free?
It's a sad day when your town discounts the veterans.

the tank

i can almost assure everyone that the tank will end up on the south side of town just like the fireworks display that used to be at the stadium, just like every other new business.what about the east and north sides of amarillo?it wont be long til the fair gets moved to that side of town also....

Plenty of other places Downtown

There are plenty of other places downtown off the 4 major north south roads the tank can be moved.

I suggest the vacant lots between Pierce and Buchanan streets between 9th and 10th... that lot has been vacant for over a decade and could use some sprucing up... this way visitors coming off the highway can see a nice piece of history right as they come into downtown from the south.

Seems simple to me...

Move it during restoration if THC wants it moved, then move it back after restoration...

Please don't hide our history.

I too served with that tank. It has always been kind of nice to see it downtown and to show it to my grandchildren and to tell them that I once drove that tank. At their young age some of them don't quite understand. I am afraid that when they find a place for it, that the place they choose will be out of the way and out of site where vandals can damage it.
Please don't hide our history, keep it where we can show our up and coming next generations, so they can see that we too are proud veterans just like these young men and women who are returning home these days.
