AMARILLO, TEXAS -- A 23-year-old woman was killed Friday morning in what police are saying appears to be an intentional crash near Loop 335.

According to police, Randall County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched at around 9:05 a.m., Friday to a vehicle driving into oncoming traffic on Loop 335. Police said several witnesses followed the vehicle as it left Loop 335 onto a private road that leads to a water treatment facility owned by the City of Amarillo.

Courtnee Schmidt, 23, the driver of the vehicle, a 2001 Toyota Highlander, drove south on the road at a high rate of speed and then drove the vehicle into a steel high line wire pole, police said.

Schmidt died as a result of her injuries, police said.

An autopsy was not ordered and police said it appeared Schmidt crashed the vehicle into the pole on purpose.

Because the event took place on city-owned property, the Amarillo Police Department's Traffic Investigation Unit is investigating the accident.
