AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The High Plains Food Bank (HPFB) will join the nation's largest single-day food drive on Saturday as thousands of pounds of food are expected to be picked up in mailboxes.
In 2011, Amarillo collected more than 20,000 pounds of food and product for the HPFB, officials said. This year the HPFB said it is hoping to raise 30,000 pounds of food for those in need across the Texas Panhandle.
The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) #1037 will collect food in several Panhandle cities, including Amarillo, Canyon, Dimmitt, Dumas, Friona, Hereford, Shamrock and Tulia, the HPFB said.
Residents are asked to simply leave the bag in their mailbox with non-perishable foods. Examples of those foods are canned vegetables, boxed dinner, ride, pinto beans, paper goods and personal hygeine items.
This is the 18th year for the Stamp Out Hunger! food drive. The food bank said it often struggles in the summer months because it exhausted the supply of donations received during the holidays.
