AMARILLO, TEXAS -- A Chihuahua puppy's life was spared on Monday afternoon when a firefighter came to its rescue as flames and smoke engulfed an apartment complex.

The puppy was carried downstairs by an Amarillo firefighter and was taken to Animal Control, fire officials said.

Unfortunately, a Pit Bull died in the fire, firefighters added.

The fire consumed the upstairs floor of the Heritage House Apartments, near 34th and Western early Monday afternoon. Fire officials said at least one apartment unit was destroyed and five others suffered smoke damage.

Amarillo Fire Captain Wes Hall said no one was home at the time of fire and there were no injuries reported. He said the apartment appeared to be vacant and someone may have just moved in.

The fire remains under investigation, officials said.
