WHEELER COUNTY, TEXAS -- A 56-year-old Amarillo man was killed early Sunday morning in a crash on Interstate-40 about 12 miles east of Shamrock, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

DPS said a 2001 Ford Expedition, driven by Cleophus Nash, 56 of Amarillo, was traveling west on I-40 at about 3:20 a.m., Sunday when it went into the center median. The SUV went back into the westbound lane before overcorrecting and entering into a skid, DPS said. The vehicle then re-entered the center median before overturning and landing upright, DPS said.

Nash was ejected, DPS said. He was pronounced dead at the scene by a Justice of the Peace.

Van Lee Johnson, a 53-year-old passenger was treated and released from the Shamrock General Hospital.

DPS said Nash was not wearing a seat belt. Johnson was wearing a seat belt, according to the incident report.
