Racing teen indicted for fatal crash

AMARILLO, TEXAS -- An Amarillo teen has been indicted on a charge of accident involving personal injury or death after a wreck that killed an Amarillo women, according to court records.

Potter county grand jurors received evidence from the Amarillo Police Department that Edwin Elias Ortiz, 19, was driving a blue Pontiac G6 at a high rate of speed, when he hit a Chevrolet Suburban, driven by Mearlene Hooker Scott, 77. The Suburban went off the highway and stopped on the access road near the 1600 block of Bowie Street, police said. 

Scott was taken to a local hospital where she died, according to police.

According to the indictment, Ortiz knowingly left the scene of the accident without rendering aid or giving identify information.

Ortiz was originally booked into the Potter County Detention Center on a third-degree felony charge and a second-degree felony charge of racing on a highway causing serious bodily injury police said. According to jail records his bond was set at $150,000.
