After a relatively wet spring and summer some area producers chose to plant dryland wheat.
However, the drought is putting a strain on many fields. Dr. Quinwu Xue, crop stress physiologist at Texas A&M Research in Bushland has been observing winter wheat in two fields, one irrigated and one dryland.
The dryland is suffering but not as badly as expected. Xue says the secret is to retain soil moisture in the fields. He says a good rotation to try is wheat, fallow, grain sorghum, fallow, and wheat.
That’s a normal three year, two crop rotation. Irrigated wheat, although more expensive, is looking much better.
