OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism has received a federal government contract to continue its police training program.

Known as Information Collection on Patrol, the course highlights the value of information collection and proper reporting by line officers. Between October 2011 and September 2012, the institute trained nearly 4,600 students across the nation. Training is delivered to state, local and tribal law enforcement line officers.

The institute's executive director, David Cid, says the training improves a line officers' ability to recognize and report suspicious activity. Cid says there are 800,000 officers on patrol in the United States and each can make a difference through traffic stops and other community interactions.

The contract is for one year with two-one year options.
