AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Interim Healthcare hosted a "Lunch and Learn" event at the Ussery-Roan Texas State Veteran's Home Thursday afternoon.

They asked Amarillo author, Dawn Taylor Wells to discuss her book, "Wrong Place at the Right Time".

"She told a story of renewal and faith and never thought she'd be a kidney donor and never was part of them medical field. She found herself being very fulfilled by giving to someone else," said Kathy Blasingame, a fan of Wells.

The book chronicles her journey as a kidney transplant donor to a complete stranger in 2004.

"I wanted to give something back and the opportunity presented itself that a man in my church needed a kidney and so I asked if it could be a donor and we were a match so six weeks later we did a kidney transplant," said Wells.

At the event, Wells also encouraged attendees to consider donating a kidney to someone in need, in honor of National Kidney Awareness Month.

"We have two good kidneys, most of us have two good kidneys, and one of them could help save a life", said Wells. "I would do it all over again if I had another kidney to give".

The U.S. Department of Health and Human services says almost 75,000 Americans are on an active kidney transplant waiting list.
