A grassfire south of Canyon, near Interstate 27, is now contained, according to authorities.

The fire started Monday morning on the bed of a hay trailer near I-27 and Dowlen Road, authorities said.

Witnesses said the fire started on the back of the trailer. The cause is not yet known.

The trailer's owner told Pronews 7 the hay was freshly cut and 25 bails, totaling $1,500, were destroyed.

According to the Randall County Sheriff's Office, at least one barn was consumed by the fire.

Strong winds made it difficult for firefighters to contain the blaze.

The fire, located close to I-27, did not make driving conditions dangerous. Because the wind was blowing the opposite way, the smoke was not causing problems on the Interstate.

Pronews 7 on scene reported the fire completely burned a field east of I-27. Exact acreage was not known.

Scanner traffic indicated multiple area fire departments responded.
