A federal investigation in Eastern New Mexico is under way into the embezzlement of funds being managed through the Eastern Plains Council of Governments.
An EPCOG Director says that it was back in March when they first became concerned over the possibility of funds being embezzled from a federal rental assistance program.
As a result, an employee was terminated and the New Mexico Mortgage and Finance, along with the state branch of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, were notified of the situation.
Officials have not disclosed the amount of money that was taken or the circumstances surrounding the issue.
EPCOG is made up of seven counties in Eastern New Mexico and helps local governments with infrastructure planning and economic development.
