study shows crashes at intersections down 30-percent
A recent study by the Texas Department of Transportation reveals that red light cameras really do reduce accidents.
While the study didn't focus on Amarillo specifically, it did look at selected intersections in 12 Texas cities from June 2007 to June 2008.
TX-DoT found that collisions dropped by 30-percent at the sampled intersections.
ProNews 7 got in touch with city officials to see if Amarillo's camera program is faring as well as in other parts of the state, but they said it's too soon to tell.
Amarillo's cameras were installed in June, and according to one official, preliminary data shows comparable decreases, with the exception of rear-end crashes which are down nearly 40-percent compared to the statewide increase of 5-percent.
