AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The current economic struggles may be to blame for a spike in domestic violence cases and a rise in shelter usage.

The Allstate Foundation conducted a recent survey which shows a 19 percent increase in shelter usage locally in Amarillo.

ProNews 7 contacted Family Support Services, which runs a shelter in Amarillo, to see if their numbers are on the rise.

Whereas typically after the new year there is a spike in cases and shelter usage due to financial stres, this year has been especially rough, official said.

"For the past two months, we've been at the top end of capacity and seen a steady need for our services. Our hotline numbers have been up, (as are) family violence and sexual assault," said Melissa Crafton of Family Support Services.

"The economy can play a factor in a batterer committing this crime, (as can) stress over bills, especially buying presents and buying gifts for the holiday season," added Crafton.

Contact the domestic abuse hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE, if you are in need of help. Or you can contact Amarillo's Family Support Services at 806-374-LIFE(5433) or log onto www.fss-ama.org.
