SANTA FE (AP) -- State transportation officials are discouraging travel in northern New Mexico because of a continuing snowstorm that has left roads icy and snowpacked.

New Mexico Department of Transportation spokesman S.U. Mahesh says a snow day has been called for all state employees in Sante Fe and northern parts of the state affected by the storm. That means they can go home for the day.

Mahesh says from 6 inches to a foot of snow has fallen as of Tuesday morning and more is expected throughout the day and evening and into Wednesday. He says driving is treacherous north of Sante Fe and he's advising folks to stay home if they can.

Interstate 40 from the Arizona line to Albuquerque is open but could be affected later in the day. The high I-40 passes east of the Albuquerque are also open but they often develop problem spots too.
