Dry weather and high wind increase fire danger
AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The fire danger in the Panhandle is on the rise, thanks to a lack of moisture. Captain Bob Johnson with the Amarillo Fire Department said that the fire danger is worse on days when the wind is strong. He also added that we are seeing more grass fires not only in Amarillo but also around the entire Panhandle.
Right now only three counties in the Panhandle have burn bans in place. Those counties are Wheeler, Dallam and Moore. Officials say that just because your area doesn't have a burn ban, that's no reason not to recognize the danger.
Captain Johnson has a few tips to help prevent wildfires. Don't throw your cigarette butts out your car window, and if you pull onto the side of the road, be sure to turn your car off.
