A closer look at Unity Church and Metropolitan Community Church

AMARILLO, TEXAS -- You might remember, a few days ago, ProNews 7 spoke with David Grisham, the leader of the Repent Amarillo group.

Here is a closer look at the Unity Church and the Metropolitan Community Church.

These churches join dozens of others listed on that web site and were among the few even willing to chat with ProNews 7 on-camera about the accusations the group makes.

The Unity Center, or Unity Church, is flagged on Repent Amarillo's web site as being, "A metaphysical church. It is pagan."

The head of the church, Dr. John Benson, tells us that they are a Christian church, and what they teach is practical Christianity.

"What practical Christianity is, is an application of the teachings of Jesus in every day life," Benson explained.

ProNews 7 also got a comment from the Metropolitan Community Church, which is described on the site as being "ecumenical," or inclusive.

Interim Pastor Bernard Barbour said they were probably not on the site for being ecumenical, but probably for the make-up of its congregation.

"I'm sure we're on it because of our outreach ministry, and we can disagree on that and that's fine," Barbour said, "But we need to be hospitable to one another."

Barbour also told ProNews 7 his opinion on tolerance may differ from Repent Amarillo's.

"Jesus used people who were ordinary, who were normal, who weren't maybe the people who were on the a list to be around. Jesus was tolerant, and I think to think of God as a God of intolerance is unfortunate and a sad way to interpret scripture," said Barbour.

ProNews 7 also went to a church that is not listed on the web site, to get a third opinion about tolerance.

"I think we should be inclusive instead of exclusive. I think when we start excluding people, we're saying that grace can't reach them," said Daryl Roach, senior pastor of MORE Church.

When asked what he thought the rest of the Christian community should do in response to the web site Roach said, "I think the church has an obligation to stand up for what's right. But our main goal is not to set things right in the world. Our main responsibility on this earth is to carry the gospel of Jesus to the world."
