LAS CRUCES (AP) -- A 60-year-old Virginia man has been named dean of New Mexico State University's College of Health and Social Services.

Tilahun Adera, a native of Ethiopia, will start July 1 at a salary of $165,000.

He currently is senior associate dean for public health and a professor of epidemiology and community health at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine.

Adera holds a pharmacy degree, a masters in environmental health and another in public health and a doctorate in public health.

The college's associate dean, Larry Olsen, left his job last year after accusations he e-mailed pornography to a professor, and department head James Robinson stepped down.

Olsen and Robinson were among those named in a lawsuit last September accusing NMSU administrators of racial discrimination and professional retaliation.
