Leads to a clean-up at Bones Hooks Park on Monday
AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Michelle Obama made a request that people get out in their communities and help out on Monday's National Day of Service.
A local group responded by organizing a clean-up out at Bones Hooks Park in coordination with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day march and celebration.
The message was spread via Facebook and e-mails.
Dozens answered the call and toted sacks and picked up trash.
"In line with President-elect Obama's family, they're out giving services to the community and so we actually organized a park clean-up in line with the march, so this is really an exciting time, and I just know that the change is here. The dream feels like it's been fulfilled," said Vanessa Miles, coordinator of the local clean-up efforts.
"I hope it continues year after year. It's a great opportunity for us all to to get outside of ourselves and volunteer for something bigger than we are," said Alexis Freyer, an Amarillo citizen who was out picking up trash.
