Amarillo Green team is ready to turn in its petition to city commissioners Tuesday
AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The Amarillo Green Team is ready to turn in its petition to city commissioners Tuesday. The local group has collected more than 600 signatures to show the city it means business.
The Green Team first met with city officials back in December with a couple of hundred folks there to show support. The goal was to show city government that there is a large section of Amarillo citizens who want to see green initiatives and programs included in Amarillo's master plan.
Since then, the group has spent time collecting additional signatures and has made plans to create a new Web site. The site, which is currently under construction, is going to be called www.gogreenamarillo.org. The name says it all: the group really wants the city to become sustainable and responsible when it comes to recycling and other green ideas.
The Web site will be an educational site full of green ideas, information on what it means to go green, how to implement green programs locally and individually, plus much more, according to Green Team members.
"It will be a great tool, it will be a Web site encompassing a lot of different kinds of green issues," said Cathy McClendon, a Green Team member.
As far as what the group wants to accomplish and what they think will happen tomorrow at the city commissioners meeting, one member said the following.
"We plan on turning this in tomorrow, and hopefully the mayor and city council will realize that there are interested people in Amarillo -- not just in recycling efforts, but in the long-term greening of Amarillo," said Cathy McClendon. "It is going to be an uphill battle, but the city is definitely interested in this and I think they're going to make a lot of efforts into greening up Amarillo."
