Region 16 meeting focuses on drug trends
AMARILLO -- Educators from around the panhandle gathered Tuesday to learn about the ever-changing challenges of recognizing drug use.
As students find new ways to reach dangerous highs, schools and communities need to be alert and on the lookout for signs of trouble.
Trends in drug use change just like what is in fashion so it is important for adults to meet regularly and share information about each new challenge.
"The kids know what's going on. It's adults who are in the dark and so today is about bringing adults up to speed with what the current trends are," said Melynn Huntley, Safe Schools/Healthy Students.
The conference also featured information on drug testing and drug paraphernalia and a demonstration by a drug dog.
The overall message was "be alert."
"Everyone needs to be alert, be informed and stay on top of things," said Huntley. "We can't stay one step ahead of them but we don't want to be two steps behind."
One display featured how kids sometimes try to hide drugs in cell phone cases and even pens.
