POTTER COUNTY -- A Potter County inmate is now back behind bars after authorities accidentally let him walk free.
The incident began Tuesday when, after serving some time in the city jail, Darrell Holleman was supposed to be sent back to the Potter County Detention Center.
But, because of a clerical error by Potter County staff, Holleman was instead released. Staff failed to put a "hold" on Holleman.
Potter County Sheriff's Officals say Holleman did not attempt to run or hide. As soon as officials realized the mistake they went looking for Holleman. They put him back in custody on Wednesday.
Officials acknowledge that it could have been a dangerous situation and are thankful the incident did not cause a major problem in the community.
"Is there an element of danger with some of them? Yes. I wouldn't ever say that there wasn't but in this case we were pretty fortunate that this one we got him back real quick," said Potter County Chief Deputy Roger Short.
Holleman is charged with some violent activity including aggravated assault.
Short says the error will be addressed internally and he hopes this is the last time this mistake will happen.
"There's all kinds of safeguards in place but people are only human and mistakes will be made," said Short. "We take credit for something like that happening."
