Golden spread council's annual reception to honor scouting was held Sunday
AMARILLO TEXAS -- The Golden spread council's annual reception to honor scouting was held Sunday. The Panhandle should be proud as 59 young men accomplished the eagle scout honor in 2008.
Four men were honored as silver beavers, someone who has maintained years of dedication and service to scouting. The following received the honor: Bob McGinnis, Dean Sather, Michael Stavenhagen, and Donald Thorne. Deno Grosz received the William T. Hornaday award which is tied to conservation.
To be an eagle scout, young men must earn 21 merit badges, and must go through rigorous written requirements among other tasks. The scout then has to complete an approved project that puts their community service to the test. In the end the honor is well worth it as the experience and lessons learned prepare young men for bright futures.
"What it will do for them in the future is just awesome, I mean the military automatically promotes them one rank, most college applications accept it as showing leadership, so it benefits them by leaps and bounds." said Deno Grosz from troop 86.
"The scout oath you say that you're trust worthy and loyal but you're also reverent and you're duties are to God, your country, and your family, so those are things that we instill in them which brings good moral character to the young men," said Grosz.
A couple of interesting notes, the boy scouts of America may award their 2 millionth eagle scout this summer, and only 2 out of every 100 kids will achieve eagle scout status.
