AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Lawmakers are being asked to strengthen fine arts education.
Advocates swarmed the Capitol on Monday, touting legislation that would measure fine arts as part of school accountability ratings and would stop schools from pulling students out of classes for standardized test tutoring.
Enrollment in arts classes has been declining for the last decade as schools have focused on core subjects for testing and ratings.
Robert Floyd, chairman of the Texas Coalition for Quality Arts Education, says the fine arts are crucial to a well rounded education.
