AMARILLO, TEXAS --
Lamar Elementary school officials are calling the man who first responded to the fire a true hero.
Joaquin Herrera was the first person to respond to Tuesday morning's fire in the school's office.
Herrera said heard the kids yelling fire and at first he thought they were joking.
After he realized there was a fire, his instinct kicked in.
Herrera cleared the kids out of the cafeteria and told another staff member to call 9-1-1. He then used his hand to break the glass of the fire extinguisher and started putting out the flames.
"It made me realize how close it could have happened. It could have turned the other way, and I wasn't about to let that happen. And I know the kids appreciate me, and as long as I'm here, I'll do anything for anybody, and those kids." Herrera said.
