Drought considered moderate or severe
OKLAHOMA CITY -- More than half of Oklahoma is in a moderate or severe drought.
The National Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska maintains a map outlining drought areas across the country. The map shows the most severe drought conditions in southwest Oklahoma and moderate drought conditions extending into northwest portions of the state.
Some temporary relief was coming Thursday in the form of a wintry mix across a wide section of Oklahoma, but a lack of precipitation this year has left portions of the state bone dry and vulnerable to wildfire and crop losses.
Oklahoma has averaged only 1.24 inches of rain so far this year, making it the 11th driest year for the state.
