AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Asarco will begin temporary layoffs at the Amarillo plant.

Les Huntington, President of the United Steelworkers Local 5613, said that 55 workers will miss work this week because customers affected by the economy aren't ordering as much product as they once did. All of those employees should return to work next week but another round of layoffs is expected in June if business doesn't pick up.

The Copper company is up for sale, a meeting in San Antonio yesterday produced news that it may be another two months before Sterlite takes over ownership.
