DALHART, TEXAS (AP) -- A series of wrecks and blizzard conditions in the far northwestern corner of the Texas Panhandle has forced the closing of a stretch of U.S. Highway 87 from Dalhart to the New Mexico state line.

The region was reporting whiteout conditions late Thursday.

Evelyn Thomas, a dispatcher and jailer for the Dallam and Hartley county sheriff's departments, said five accidents had been reported along a 40-mile stretch of U.S. 87 between Dalhart and Texline. Other vehicles had slid off into ditches. She had no immediate report on injuries.

Thomas said blizzard conditions were reported on U.S. 87 and on U.S. 54 west to Tucumcari, N.M.

Authorities closed U.S. 54 west of Dalhart and U.S. 385 north of Dalhart because of low visibility in blowing snow.
